Two Ways to Ride

Same Bronco, same trail, same 2.5 hours. The only question is whose hands are on the wheel.

Option 1

You Drive

$399per Bronco · up to 4 guests

Hands on the wheel. Your guide rides shotgun, calling the line and working the gates. You'll climb grades you wouldn't believe a vehicle can climb — and you'll be the one doing it.

Drivers must be 18 or older. No off-road experience needed — your guide talks you through every obstacle.

Option 2

We Drive

$349per Bronco · up to 4 guests

Your guide takes the wheel. You get the window seat, the camera, and the stories — the Chumash who first lived on this land, the Vaqueros who built California ranching, and why these mountains run east to west when almost none of them do.

Best if you'd rather watch the valley than the road.

The educational experience

What You'll Discover on Your Journey

Uncover the Past:

A Journey Through Time. Travel across a landscape rich with history. Your expert guide will share stories of the Chumash people who first called this land home, the legendary Vaqueros who forged California's ranching tradition here, and the agricultural evolution that has shaped the valley into what it is today.

Read the Landscape:

Learn how millions of years of powerful tectonic forces created the iconic, east-west trending Santa Ynez Mountains. Discover the secrets hidden within the ranch's unique geological formations and understand how this geology dictates the flow of water, the types of soil, and the very character of the land.

Explore a working Farm And Ranch:

Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of the California chaparral and oak woodlands. Learn to identify native plants and wildlife, from majestic Red-tailed hawks to resilient sagebrush, and grasp the vital importance of conservation of ranching and farming.

The educational program

An educational experience, by design

Our 4x4 tours operate as small, guided Educational Experiences and Opportunities for the general public — lessons on the agricultural, natural, and cultural resources of a working ranch, conducted on the ranch's existing roads with planned stops along the way. That framework is what makes the experience possible on agricultural land, and it shapes every tour we run.

  • A 2.5-hour educational loop across backcountry portions of the property, with planned stops at points of interest.
  • Three lessons on every tour: ranching and Chumash history, regional geology, and local flora and fauna.
  • Small groups. Guided by a trained interpretive guide, with the whole group in earshot.
  • A working agricultural premise. You're touring an irrigated cut-flower (protea) operation and active cattle grazing land — not a theme park.

How we keep the ranch a ranch

  • Tours follow pre-existing ranch roads and trails only — no new roads, trails, grading, or structures.
  • A limited number of tours each year, so the land stays quiet most of the time.
  • No amplified sound. Your guide's voice and the valley are the soundtrack.
  • Designated guest parking on previously disturbed ground, away from active cultivation and native vegetation.
  • Dust control on the parking area and dirt roads following Air Pollution Control District best practices.
  • Guest access off Highline Adventures Drive, the ranch's existing entrance.

These Educational Experiences and Opportunities are conducted as a planning-permit-exempt use under Santa Barbara County LUDC Section 35.42.035.

History, geology, and a living ecosystem

The Story of the Land: A Cultural Heritage Tour

From the ancient pathways of the Chumash people to the birth of the California Vaquero, this land is a living document of history. Your tour is a chronological journey that reveals the human stories etched into the landscape, connecting you to the rich heritage of a working California rancho.

Forged by Tectonic Forces: The Geology of the Ranch

Discover the story told by the stones. The Santa Ynez Mountains are a geological anomaly, running east-to-west. Learn how this unique orientation was created by massive tectonic forces and how the underlying rock dictates everything from the shape of the canyons to the world-class terroir of the valley's vineyards.

A California Biodiversity Hotspot: The Ranch Ecosystem

This ranch is a vital piece of a globally significant ecological puzzle. As we travel through pristine chaparral and oak woodlands, you'll learn to identify native plants and animals and understand their roles in this complex web of life. It's a living lesson in the importance of conservation and land stewardship.

FAQ

You've got questions, we've got answers!

Can I really drive the Bronco myself?

Yes. Choose Option 1 at booking and you're behind the wheel for the whole tour. Your guide rides along, picks the line, and talks you through every climb and descent. We've built the route so it's genuinely challenging without ever being beyond a first-timer.

Drivers must be 18 or older. Everyone else in the Bronco can be any age.

Do I need off-road experience?

None at all. Most people who choose the driving option have never taken a vehicle off pavement. Your guide is right there the entire time, and these Broncos are built for exactly this terrain.

What if I start driving and decide I'd rather not?

Just say so. Your guide will take over and the tour continues — same route, same stops. Nobody has ever been talked into driving something they weren't comfortable with.

Is this tour primarily for education?

Yes. Our tours are specifically designed as 'Educational Experiences' While the journey is adventurous and the scenery is breathtaking, the core of the experience is a structured, guided lesson on the agricultural and natural resources of our private working ranch. It is an ideal experience for those with a curiosity for the natural world and local history

What is your company's approach to environmental stewardship?

Our commitment to stewardship is central to our operation. To preserve the natural integrity of the ranch, our tours exclusively follow historic, pre-existing ranch roads and trails. We operate under a low-impact model designed to minimize disturbance to the native chaparral and oak woodland ecosystems, allowing for authentic wildlife observation while leaving the landscape undisturbed. Our goal is to educate guests on the importance of conservation in this globally significant biodiversity hotspot.

You mention this is a "working ranch." What does that mean and what might we see?

This 1,200-acre property is an active agricultural enterprise. Our educational tours are designed to be a window into this world. While we can't guarantee specific sightings of ranching activities, the tour passes through historic and current wildlife grazing areas. Your guide will explain how this ranching tradition, started by the legendary Vaqueros, has evolved and continues to shape the valley today.

How physically demanding is the tour? Is it suitable for all ages?

The tour itself is not physically strenuous, as guests are seated for most of the journey. However, the ride explores rugged, unpaved backcountry roads and can be bumpy. We have several planned stops where guests may disembark on uneven ground to get a closer look at the landscape. It is generally suitable for a wide range of ages, but it may not be appropriate for individuals with serious back or neck issues or for expectant mothers. Please contact us if you have specific concerns.

What should I wear or bring on the tour?

We recommend wearing layered clothing, as temperatures can change with elevation and time of day. Closed-toe shoes are required for your safety and comfort during stops. We also suggest bringing sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen, as the tour vehicle is open-air. Most importantly, bring your camera and a curious mind ready for a journey through the region's natural and cultural history.

Are your tours suitable for private groups or corporate outings?

Absolutely. Our small-group format is ideal for private and corporate events. We offer a unique and engaging team-building experience that combines adventure with learning about the local environment, geology, and history. It's a memorable way to connect with colleagues or celebrate a special occasion while exploring the exclusive backcountry of the Santa Ynez Valley. Please contact us directly to discuss arrangements for your private tour.
